When Henry and Rose Keunen of Strathoy, Ontario, Canada searched the world for a milk- pasteurizing system that also could wash and disinfect feeding bottles, they drew a blank. So Henry decided to build his own.

The automated bottle washer incorporates a Westwaard pasteurizer that also pasteurizes waste milk for calves. The bottles are disinfected before every feeding and filled automatically from the pasteurizer at a consistent feeding temperature of 38°C.

Their sanitation vigilance has resulted in just a 2-percent mortality rate from birth to two years of age. Careful recordkeeping shows that, since the system was put in place, the herd has a lower incidence of diarrhea, and zero cases of passive transfer of Johne’s disease.
