Evaluating the economic impact of
internal parasites on your herd.
Internal parasites in your beef herd can cost you $20 to $200 per head! If you have cattle on pasture, you have internal parasites. And internal parasites can take a bite out of your bottom line. That’s why you need more than an educated guess to make production decisions. You need facts. Studies show with absent or inadequate treatment, production losses from internal parasites can easily reach $20 to $200 per head per grazing season. Losses can vary depending on the level of infestation, pasture management, diet, age, worm type, geography, and other factors. But one fact remains. If you don’t control parasites, they will control you.
Early lactation, when a cow is under the most stress and her immune system is weakened, is also the time that internal parasites can impact production the most. Internal parasitism in dairy cattle causes significant milk loss — as much as six pounds per cow per day. Over an entire herd, that adds up to considerable lost income. Research proves it. In a University of Wisconsin study, cows infected with parasites lost an average of 6.47 pounds of milk per day in the first 90-day period after freshening compared to non-infected control cows. For 1,500 cows at $12 cwt, that adds up to $1,080 per day, $7,500 per week, $32,400 per month. Hopefully, parasites are not impacting your herd to that degree. But what if the impact were just half that? Can you spare $15,000 per month? If you’re currently deworming your cattle, do you know how effective your dewormer is? Different parasite control products offer varying levels of effectiveness — especially when it comes to internal parasites. That’s why it’s important to know your current worm burden even if you’re already treating your cattle.
The Parasite Evaluation program is designed to give you unbiased information that you can use to make meaningful, informed decisions about your operation. Sample analyses are performed by four independent laboratories and monitored by industry experts — including two Ph.D. parasitologists. As a participant in the Parasite Evaluation program, you will receive their consultative expertise, free of charge. Your herd’s worm burden will be measured using effective, proven scientific methods at independent laboratories. Participation is free and simple. Participation in the Parasite Evaluation program is simple and, best of all, entirely free to you. Although Intervet has no role in analyzing the collected data, Intervet is proud to sponsor the Parasite Evaluation program. As sponsor, Intervet covers the cost of manufacturing the sample-collection kits as well as the lab cost of analyzing your samples. The kit contains instructions, small collection bags, and one large bag to return the samples for testing. You will be asked to provide your parasite treatment history only after you receive your results — ensuring that the results you receive have not been influenced by the lab’s knowledge of the products you used. Once you have received your results, you will be able to compare them with aggregated data from your county, state or region. Just call 1-800-441-8272 to request your collection kit today.
