Amy Stanton, BSc, PhD candidate, University of Guelph, spoke at the Pfizer Dairy Wellness seminar in May on bovine respiratory disease in dairy calves. Research by Stanton and others has shown a significant impact on growth and development of calves if they have had BRD as a calf.

Heifers that experienced BRD as a calf:

  • Had a decreased average daily gain until 9 months of age and a lower probability of entering milking herd.
  • Had a decreased probability of calving at less than 25 months of age.
  • Had an increased probability of having a difficulty first calving.
