Multi-dose syringes often are used on large dairies for convenience and time-savings. Doug Braun, DVM, Pfizer Animal Health, says this type of syringe is fine to use when administering vaccines, with a few important guidelines:

  • Use a separate syringe for each vaccine.
  • When processing groups of cattle, change needles at least every 10 animals.
  • Never insert a used needle into a vaccine vial.
  • After use every day, rinse syringes in warm, 100º F water, then disassemble and allow the parts to dry on a clean surface in a clean room.  If the syringes are used with oil-based vaccines or killed, adjuvanted vaccines they should be rinsed in warm, 100ºF water, then washed in hot, soapy water at 120º F.  Finally, rinse with clean, hot water, disassemble and allow the parts to dry on a clean surface in a clean room.
