In related news, a new article in the Journal of Dairy Science finds that feeding oregano to dairy cows may reduce methane emissions without impacting milk output.

According to researchers, oregano leaves have demonstrated antimethanogenic effects within eight hours after feeding. Adding between 250 and 750 grams of oregano (roughly one half to two pounds) to a cow’s total mixed ration also increased feed efficiency by reducing total dry matter intake without altering milk production or the fatty acid composition of the milk.

The findings will need to be evaluated over long feeding periods before application in the dairy industry can be considered, but are “promising,” researchers note.
