From the FYI files: An Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy working group is conducting a pilot study to identify practices that would enhance dairy product traceability. This has nothing to do with dairy producers. Well, enhanced traceability will make your milk even more competitive in the global dairy market, but the traceability changes they’re talking about here refer only to the processing end of the U.S. dairy industry.

Based on the findings of the pilot program, the working group will recommend voluntary best practices to the industry — starting with the bulk tank. These recommendations will not require dairy producers to change anything about their operations, as they will apply only to post-farm milk.

Program participants include several U.S. co-ops and processors. The proposed measures are aimed at meeting Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) requirements as well as the desire for enhanced traceability from customers and end-users.
