Milk production up for the 15th straight month

click image to zoom Milk production in the 23 major milk-producing states totaled 15.5 billion pounds during April, up 1.7 percent from a year earlier, according to USDA’s Milk Production report released on May 18.

Across all 50 states, production was up 1.5 percent.

It was the 15th month in a row that milk production increased on a yearover-year basis.

Production per cow in the 23 major states averaged 1,834 pounds for April, 9 pounds above April 2010.

The national cow herd continues to grow. According to the report, the number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major states was 8.43 million head, 97,000 head more than April 2010, and 8,000 head more than last month.
