Pennsylvania plant marketing milk with California standards

One small dairy plant thinks it can increase milk sales by adopting California milk standards – in Pennsylvania. Family Dairy Farms LLC, Denver, Pa., hopes their new “White Gold” product has the taste to make up for the slump in national milk sales.

Family Dairy Farms, a farmer-run LLC producing 16,000 half gallons of Pennsylvania milk per month, began working to sell the new milk with California standards last June.

“When you remove product from milk, you basically give the consumer the water. Consumers are tired of drinking water; they want flavor,” said Family Dairy Farms LLC president Mike Eby in a television interview with Blue Ridge Communications, local television channel 11 in Lancaster, Pa. Eby is a 60-cow Registered Holstein producer active with the National Dairy Producers Organization whose family also owns a bed and breakfast.

White Gold is only available in one Pennsylvania store at the moment, but Eby hopes it starts a national fluid milk consumption revolution.

“This is the answer to the nation’s milk consumption problem, which is on a 30-year decline,” said Eby. “I believe people will spend the extra 60 cents to get a high quality product, that has no growth hormones in it, that is guaranteed 100% U.S.A., and that tastes great."

California milk has higher solids nonfat content than milk meeting the minimum U.S. fluid milk standards, as removed fat is replaced with solids during processing.

Dairy Farmers in PA should be very happy now. The prices all dairy farmers in the entire nation, including PA are at all time record highs! It is a fact. If you hear of a dairy farmer complaining they are not making money, maybe they shouldn't be in the business and find something else to do.

Found out about White Gold milk at our Columbia market. This is by far the best milk we ever drank! We are big milk drinkers and go to market solely for this milk product. The market stand is manned by an Amish family and found that the milk was picked up in Denver PA. We hope we can continue to be able to purchase this product.
