A spreadsheet is available to help you achieve a high silage density when filling a bunker silo. The spreadsheet, recently updated by Brian Holmes, extension agricultural engineer at the University of Wisconsin, and Richard Muck, forage preservation researcher at the U.S. Dairy Forage Research Center in Madison, Wis., allows you to input factors such as silage depth, tractor weight, forage delivery rate, forage dry matter and packing time. Then, it uses these inputs to calculate forage dry matter per cubic foot.
You can access the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet at the following Web site: www.uwex.edu/ces/crops/
Once there, scroll down and click on "Bunker Silo Density Calculator."
