Small dairies can use commodity sheds too

Buying commodities in bulk is just one of the things Galen and Jeanne Breuer do to keep their 60-cow dairy competitive.

With a small herd, the Breuers, Hull, Iowa, only need one semi-load of cottonseed per year. Building this commodity shed for storage allows them to buy that one semi-load at the time of year when cottonseed is the cheapest — during the fall. And that helps them keep their cost of production in line with larger producers.

The Breuers also use the commodity shed to store various other feedstuffs throughout the year.
