Starting your own dairy requires courage, boldness and sense of adventure.

Phil Durst with Michigan State University Extension shares some of the start-up advice he learned from young dairy producers and employees at a recent extension event:

• Don’t try to do everything yourself.

• Keep procedures simple enough so others can do them the same way.

• Maintain a financial margin.

• Use an accountant that will give you quarterly updates on your financial progress.

• There is more than one way to do things; evaluate various alternatives.

• Build with the capacity for growth in mind.

• Stay hungry for learning.

The young producers came up with great words of advice for their friends just starting out, but this advice is also good for established farmers to review.
