Automated feeding systems for calves need to be managed properly to avoid competition.

According to Marcia Endres, University of Minnesota, potential strategies would be to keep group sizes relatively small, provide adequate training prior to introducing new calves to the group, and feeding higher quantities of milk.

Feeding larger amounts of milk also may reduce the number of “unrewarded” visits to the feeder.
