Fire Prevention and preparedness can be used to minimize the potential for fire on your farm.

“A large portion of prevention should go into planning to reduce risk,” says Dean Ross, an agrosecurity and dairy farm management consultant based in Michigan.

When building or remodeling facilities, for example, consider ways to incorporate fireproof or low flammability materials, including updating electrical service and wiring to meet modern uses and codes, Ross says.

Check with your power company to see if there are incentives available to defray the cost of upgrading. This also is a good time to re-examine insurance coverage against fire for animals, buildings and equipment.
