Byproduct checklist

Many byproducts are used in dairy diets. To save money and avoid problems, assess these eight criteria provided by Alejandro Castillo with the University of California Cooperative Extension before purchasing new byproduct feeds:

• Possible mycotoxin contamination.

• Mineral content.

• Dietary fat content.

• Moisture level.

• Fiber level.

• Palatability.

• Crude protein content.

• Animal performance.
