Barn fire preventative measures are important, but so, too, is adopting a culture of preparedness on your farm.
“A first step is to evaluate and adjust the availability, type and size of fire extinguishers on the farm,” says Dean Ross, an agrosecurity and dairy farm management consultant based in Michigan.
The types and sizes of fire extinguishers that you will need depend upon the type of fire that could develop in different areas of the farm. Harvest time is an especially good time to assess your extinguisher needs. Each truck, tractor and self-propelled harvester or combine should have at least one extinguisher in the field.
