A good reminder about dry-cow therapy

Dry-cow therapy is designed to eliminate existing mastitis infections and prevent new infections from occurring.

Just because you dry-treat cows does not mean you should neglect other aspects of your dry-cow management program, says Richard Meiring, veterinarian at Ohio State University’s Large Animal Services in Marysville, Ohio. A dirty environment, for example, can overwhelm any dry-cow treatment.

"Effective dry-cow management must include environmental management, nutritional management and vaccinations, as well as dry-cow therapy," Meiring says.
