If wire panels are used with calf hutches, freezing can be a problem in the winter. It is frustrating to have to move a calf in or out of a hutch only to find the pen frozen to the ground, says Linda Greenwood, of Greenwood Dairy, a 1,200-cow facility in Canton, N.Y.  So, before the cold weather comes, she puts a small motorcycle tire under the front part of the pen. “Then, at the hutch, I lift the ends of the wire panel off the ground, getting it level with the tire. This ensures the pens will not freeze in,” she adds.
