Here are five key handling and management tips from the experts at Pioneer Hi-Bred International to keep in mind when harvesting your alfalfa silage this season:

  • Harvest alfalfa at the proper stage of maturity.
  • Ensile it at the proper moisture content. For bunker silos, that means 60 percent to 70 percent moisture; 60 percent to 68 percent moisture for concrete tower silos and silo bags; and 40 percent to 45 percent moisture for oxygen limiting facilities.
  • Chop haylage at the proper theoretical length of chop so that 20 percent to 25 percent of particles are more than 1.5 inches long.
  • Pack bunker silos in thin layers, preferably 4 inches to 6 inches in depth.
  • Seal bunkers immediately for best results.
