To take full advantage of manure’s fertilizer value, make sure you’re using correct application rates and uniform application. Manure spreader calibration is essential.

According to researchers at Iowa State University, the most common method of calibration is to spread one or more loads over a known area and divide the weight of manure by the land area to which it was applied. For example, if a load weighs one ton and it is spread over an acre, application is one ton per acre. This calculation is most easily done if you have scales available so you know exactly how much a load of manure weighs.
