When was the last time you checked your credit history? If it’s been more than 18 months, then it’s time to do it again, says David Kohl, professor of agricultural and applied economics at Virginia Tech. Conducting a periodic check of your credit history can alert you to any errors, and may even open your eyes to a problem you didn’t know about, such as a spouse’s unpaid credit card bills.
You may think it’s unnecessary, but Kohl reports that about 30 percent of people who request a credit report discover a problem.
Three major companies offer credit reports for a small fee. They are:
- Equifax (800) 685-1111
- Experian (888) 397-3742
- Trans Union (800) 888-4213
