Electric fences, cow trainers and crowd gates can do more harm than good when not installed or used properly.

To prevent harm to your animals, check the voltage of these devices with a digital voltmeter. Check the voltage output at the power source twice per year for electric fences and every six months for cow trainers and crowd gates. Wisconsin Public Service (WPS) offers the following voltage recommendations:

Device – Voltage recommendation
Cow trainer – Less than 2,500 volts
Crowd gate – Less than 2,500 volts
Electric fence – 2,000 - 6,000 volts

For more information, you can obtain a single copy of “Installation and Operation of Electric Fences, Cow Trainers and Crowd Gates” by calling WPS at (877) 444-0888, or by sending e-mail to mmoore@wpsr.com
