Dedicated water lines

 Resize text

Each water fountain in the growing-heifer barns at the University of Minnesota’s Southern Research and Outreach Center has its own water line. One fountain serves two pens. This system makes it possible to target medication to a small number of heifers, rather than medicating the entire barn, says Hugh Chester-Jones, associate professor of dairy production systems.

The design also makes it possible to use a water meter to measure the water intake from a specific fountain.
