It’s impossible to cost-effectively clear clinical mastitis cases with a single treatment protocol. But, you can come up with effective, economical solutions by putting together good science, good management and economics, says Gary Neubauer, technical service consultant for Pharmacia Animal Health.

Follow these steps:

  • Determine whether the drug you plan to use is efficacious against the offending pathogen and is backed by sound research.
  • Consider drug cost on a per-day basis. Determine the cost of milk discard, how long milk must be withheld, relapse rate and somatic cell counts.
  • Make your treatment decision.
