Evaluate free-stalls from cow’s perspective

If your cows aren’t using their free-stalls as you intend, perhaps the design doesn’t meet their comfort criteria. According to Ken Nordlund, University of Wisconsin veterinarian, you may need to redesign your stalls, such as:

  • Improving surface cushion.
  • Enlarging stalls for big cows.
  • Removing lunge-and-bob obstructions, such as high brisket boards.
  • Moving neck rails forward.
