Mike Larson of Larson acres in Evansville, Wis., began using health-trait data as selection criteria for A.I. sires about a year ago. “I definitely spend more time looking at health traits now because I believe the longevity of the animals is important,” Larson says. And that analysis includes Select Sires’ HealthMark sires, a new and unique category of sires that combines predicted transmitting ability data for health and fertility traits with genetic marker data. “It’s one more tool I can use to give me more information,” he says.
