Before you jump into a synchronization program to help get your heifers bred, be sure to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of synching heifers, says Jose Santos, Veterinary Medicine Teaching and Research Center in Tulare, Calif.

Advantages of synching:

  • Shortens the interval from introduction to the breeding group to AI/pregnancy.
  • Reduces variability on age at pregnancy and first calving.
  • Might improve first-lactation health/reproduction/milk production.

Disadvantages:

  • Can potentially reduce conception rate at first insemination.
  • Extra cost, including labor.
  • Requires 100-percent compliance to get good results.
