These waterers have allowed Heim’s hillcrest dairy in Kewaunee, Wis., to add more water capacity without removing any free-stalls. The homemade waterer shown at right was fashioned out of PVC pipe bought at a sewer-supply store. It holds approximately 90 gallons of water. Bolted to a wall, it fits into open areas at the end of the barn. The Heims have added two of these waterers — one 8 feet long and the other 12 feet long. The waterer shown at left is a commercial model. It takes the same amount of floor space, but is taller and holds more water than a previous waterer used at the end of the barn.
