Round-bale feeders have been banished from this grazing operation. Instead, Don Gardner, veterinarian and custom-heifer raiser in Huddleston, Va., built fenceline feeding areas for round bales. The feeding area has a covered roof to protect the hay, and heifers can eat from three sides of the bales. In addition, a tractor and loader can easily deliver the round bales, as well as clean out any old hay. And best of all, the fenceline feeder minimizes the damage commonly done to pastures when a round-bale feeder is used.
