Make the first time a cow enters a hoof-trimming chute a good experience. That’s the message Temple Grandin, noted animal behaviorist from Colorado State University, had for hoof trimmers attending a hoof-health conference held at the end of June in Worthington, Ohio.

“It is extremely important when an animal is first introduced to something like a hoof-trimming chute that she doesn’t have a terrible experience,” Grandin says. Bad first experiences create a fear memory, which cannot be erased. “You don’t want her afraid of the hoof-trimming chute for the rest of her life.”
