The best thing employers can do to build loyalty among their workers is to recognize the importance of personal and family time.

Aon Consulting Inc. found this in a survey of 1,800 employees. Among the other top reasons for employee loyalty:

  • The organization provides opportunities for personal growth.
  • The business satisfies customer or societal needs.
  • Good communication regarding employee benefits.
  • Co-workers’ skills keep pace with the demands of the job.

Managers should use this list as a starting point for building employee loyalty. However, Dave Grusenmeyer, senior extension associate with Cornell University, suggests that you also try to find any special motivators that may be particular to your work place. Remember, what motivates may be different for each employee and might change over time.
