“Dairy producers who employ Hispanic workers should learn Spanish, or they should help their managers learn Spanish,” says Vinton Smith, Penn State extension dairy management agent in Gettysburg, Pa.
Here are some ways to help you overcome a language barrier with Spanish-speaking employees:
1. Purchase interactive software that allows you to listen to Spanish words and phrases as you read them on the computer screen. The software will enable you to record and hear yourself say the words and phrases in Spanish.
2. Take a conversational Spanish class at a local community college.
3. Practice speaking Spanish with your employees. This will help you learn the dialect and voice inflection that is specific to the Spanish language and greatly improve communication with your employees.
4. Surround yourself in the language and culture by taking an “immersion” course in a Spanish-speaking country. Although costly, this is one of the best ways to learn a new language.
