Gate converts to windbreak

This gate on the west end of the dry-cow barn at Dovin Dairy Farms in Pittsfield, Ohio, quickly converts to a windbreak during inclement weather. Sturdy conveyor belting — the kind used by paper mills — serves as the windbreak material. Self-drill screws secure the material to the homemade gate, says John Dovin, a partner in the 600-cow dairy. To create the windbreak, they simply unroll the belting.

During warm weather, the belting can be rolled back up to facilitate airflow through the barn. "Come summertime, it’s a wide-open barn," Dovin adds.
