To capture the most value from your market cows, Chuck Schwartau, regional livestock extension educator for the University of Minnesota, suggests the following:

  • Market cows in a timely fashion.
  • Consider putting cows with poor body condition on feed for a short period of time before marketing them. But, you also should calculate your cost for extended feeding.
  • Make sure that all antibiotics have been withdrawn for the proper amount of time.
  • Follow a quality-assurance program, and identify those cows that complete the program.

By following these procedures (along with preventing lesions and minimizing bruising), producers can capture more value from their animals, put a better product on consumers’ plates, and help keep the cull-cow market a viable option, he says.
