Not all of the milk you produce is equally profitable, says John Fetrow, veterinarian at the University of Minnesota. The most profitable milk is the extra milk you get from an existing cow, he told attendees of the Professional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin’s “Financial Analysis” seminar held in late January.

The next most profitable milk usually comes from adding more cows to your existing facilities, presuming you’re not overcrowded. And, the third most profitable milk comes from getting more milk from more cows in more facilities.
