When the partners of five Star Dairy, Elk Mound, Wis., decided to install a methane digester, they left themselves plenty of room for facilities and future expansion, as well as manure containment.

For example, this facility, called the solid separation building, (for the material that comes out of the digester) sits directly adjacent to and slightly elevated from the manure-storage lagoon. That way, any runoff can be contained and captured without any pumps in case of emergency. It’s also located near the free-stall barns so the bedding material is handy.
