Graze at early third leaf

 Resize text

In order to get the most out of your grasses, cows should enter the paddock after grasses have set their second leaf and third leaves are starting to emerge, but before canopy closure has occurred. Once you get canopy closure, the plant only grows more stem because the sun doesn’t reach the ground, explains John Roche, associate professor of ruminant nutrition and farm systems, University of Tasmania in Australia. Two to three leaves on the tiller is prime grazing time for both grass quality and regrowth benefit to the plant.
