If you have mattresses in your free-stalls, consider using these additional tactics to help your lame cows recover faster, says Nigel Cook, veterinarian at the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine.
- Give lame cows access to a pasture, dry lot or bedded pack while they wait to be treated and for a few days afterward while they recover to help increase their lying time.
- Set up sand free-stalls in the hospital area and move lame cows there while they recover.
