How do you know if your corn is ground finely enough? The most definitive method is to sift corn through grain particle screens, suggests Chase Scott, extension dairy agent in Wytheville, Va. (You can make your own screen with materials from your local hardware store, purchase screens from supply companies or ask your feed representative to screen your corn for you.)

Use the following screen sizes to evaluate ground corn: #4, #8, #16, #30 and a bottom pan. Add corn to the device, shake well, and determine how much corn remains in each screen. The chart below shows the recommended distribution of particle size for ground corn, either dry or high-moisture (25 percent to 30 percent moisture), in percentages.
