It's easy to overfeed certain minerals in dairy diets. bill weiss, of the Ohio State University, says mineral overload often comes from these six areas:
- Errors at the feed mill or mixing mistakes at the TMR.
- Ingredients with high mineral levels (included in the ration because of low cost).
- Alfalfa and grasses high in potassium.
- Distillers grains (especially high sulfur).
- Supplementation beyond the animal's requirement.
