How to evaluate your fresh-cow program

If you are going to use an intensive fresh-cow program, you need to monitor your results. Earl Aalseth, of Aalseth Dairy Consulting, recommends keeping the following data to judge the success of your program and also find areas that are in need of improvement:

  • Proportion of cows with each transition disease.
  • 30-day, 60-day, 90-day and peak milk production.
  • Daily milk production.
  • Fresh-cow deaths and cull rates. The goal should be less than 5 percent of cows lost during the first 60 days in milk.
