Not all data are suitable for statistical-process-control analysis, says Carlos Risco, of the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Florida. To be used for SPC, data must be:

  • Sensitive to changes in methods, people, equipment and the environment.
  • Easy, inexpensive and routinely collected on a frequent basis.
  • Valuable economically; that is, impact the dairy farm’s economic bottom- line.
  • Measureable, so that it is possible to standardize and specify.
  • Familiar and easily understood by process operators (employees).
  • Collected at an appropriate process level (cow level, barn level or farm level).
