Dueppengiesser Dairy Company, Perry, N.Y., offers a monthly $1,000 bonus to the milking crew if it keeps the somatic cell count under 150,000 and bacteria counts under 10,000 during the entire month. Peter Dueppengiesser, one of the owners, admits he’s not big on offering incentives, but this one has created an awareness of the dairy’s milk-quality goals. That awareness keeps the milkers committed to keeping SCC low. And it’s paid off. Last year, SCC averaged 117,000 cells per milliliter.
