If infertility seems to be a problem on your dairy, check some of the problem breeders for Leptospirosis hardjo, says Carole Bolin, section chief of bacteriology at the Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine.

L. hardjo colonizes in the reproductive tract and in the kidneys. So, instead of seeing a lot of abortions — which is what most people associate with Lepto — you get other signs as well, including:

  • Prolonged calving intervals.
  • Failure to calve.
  • High number of services per conception.
  • Less-than-expected milk production.
