Mastitis prevention begins at birth

If a heifer freshens with mastitis, you failed her somewhere earlier in life. Mastitis prevention must begin at day one, says Jim Brett, veterinarian in Montezuma, Ga. He lists the keys to preventing mastitis in heifers as: clean housing, inorganic bedding, a clean environment, fly control, regular exams that include palpating the udder and prompt treatment when a problem is discovered.
