According to a University of California survey of 112 dairies across the U.S., the average wage paid to milkers is about $9.25 per hour. That's virtually unchanged from a similar survey conducted three years ago.

However, the data do show some interesting regional differences. For example, 81 percent of milkers in the West are foreign-born, as compared to 49 percent of milkers in the Midwest and 22 percent in the Northeast. Meanwhile, 30 percent of milkers in the Northeast are female, compared to 15 percent of Midwestern milkers and 8 percent in both the West and Southeast.
