Oatmeal may be lumpy, but bags of wet distillers grains should be smooth.
To minimize packing problems when ensiling wet distillers with a forage, such as shredded corn stalks, be sure to chop the forage fine enough, says Alvaro Garcia, dairy extension specialist at South Dakota State University. To prevent spoilage at feedout, try ensiling the distillers-grains-and-corn-stalk mixture in smaller bags. That way, you’ll use it up faster, which decreases the amount of time that the feed is exposed to air.
