“Successful dairy producers need to learn how to motivate their Hispanice workers to learn English, and then encourage them to use it around the farm,” say Rafael Ramos, a labor consultant with the Pennsylvania Mushroom Growers in Chester County, Pa., and Vinton Smith, regional dairy management agent with Penn State cooperative extension. Ramos and Smith suggest using the following motivational tools:

1. Lead by example. In other words, strive to learn their language, too. This inspires your Hispanic employees to learn English and removes some of the apprehension they may have about communicating with you.

2. Provide financial incentives or bonuses. “When (employees) have an opportunity to earn more money by attending English classes, they will often take you up on your offer.”
