For producers who have a post-and-rail feeding system, veterinarian Andy Johnson, of Seymour, Wis., recommends extending the neck rail forward into the feeding alley.

Johnson recommends that producers extend the rail 1.5 to 2 inches in front of the feed side of the curb. Extending the neck rail forward is similar in concept to tilting headlocks forward to encourage dry matter intake.
