The American Jersey Cattle Association recently unveiled the new Jersey Performance Index (JPI) for Jersey bulls. The release coincided with the August USDA genetic evaluations and replaced the Production Type Index introduced 24 years ago.

The new index is based on five factors:

  • Predicted transmitting ability (PTA) protein — 50 percent of the total.
  • PTA fat — 20 percent.
  • Functional Trait Index — 15 percent.
  • PTA somatic cell score — minus 5 percent.
  • PTA productive life —5 percent.
  • Functional Udder Index — 5 percent.
