Several factors are critical to the success of feeding high-straw, low- energy diets, Jim Drackley, professor of dairy nutrition at the University of Illinois, reminded audiences at the 4-State Dairy Nutrition and Management Conference.

For success, you must:

  • Prevent sorting.
  • Ensure continuous and
    non-crowded access
    to the TMR.
  • Monitor dry matter content.
  • Pay attention to detail.

“Where ‘train wrecks’ have been reported, one or more of these factors have been faulty,” he says.
